Coral Reef of Abaco are very delicate ecosystems that are limited by their extremely slow growth. Decades of coral growth could be destroyed by Hurricanes, especially during August and September, the peak of hurricane season in the Bahamas.
In Fowl Cay reserve a barge and its tugboat ran aground on the reef and the removal of these vessels is a critical measure that needs to be taken to prevent further loss.In a recent statement released by Bahamas National Trust, Denise Mizell (Perry institute for Marine Science Abaco Program Manager) amplifies the importance of removing these vessels, stating Every day that these vessels are on the reef, there is another day of damage. If the ropes and debris present around the site can be removed as quickly as possible, it would prevent future damages of the corals currently being impacted. BEP-Foundation encourages, with our partner, the Bahamian government to take action in removing the vessels as soon as possible.
